Affine

Thin ExtraLight Light Regular Medium Bold Black

Overview

Affine is a calligraphic display typeface with roots in Copperplate script styles and high contrast Didone fonts.

It includes an impressive set of beautiful stylistic letters which give the typeface a bold dramatic look where contrast is the rhythm and elegant strokes lead the movement.

Notes On The Design

I have always loved very light serif styles, which exude a sense of elegance and timelessness. However I do have a thing for fat faces too. I love working with extreme masters because they each tell a different story and serve a different purpose.

Thus, Affine naturally shaped itself around this initial bothering thought of ”what would a Copperplate fat face look like“ and ”how far can I take it“.

During my Copperplate researches I stumbled upon Playground by Pangram Pangram® which has been a great inspiration to figure out shapes that would work for both extremes.

On one hand, Affine is fine and delicate, with extra long serifs and calligraphic curves. On the other hand, it is bold and impressive with tight spacing and compact rhythm. In both cases, it is made to stand out with style.

So in the end, is it a modern Copperplate or a script Didone? I don’t really know. All I know is: I threw everything I liked into the pot and watched how it turned out.

Affine (which means “Refine” in french) is the result of a long process of refinement, like a constant stirring of all the ingredients of a cooking recipe, until they all blend together, complimenting and complementing each other and where no one overtakes the other.

Specifications

Like any script typeface that intends to reproduce a flowing cursive writing style, Affine requires a set of contextual alternates and OpenType script to ensure smooth connections and uninterrupted pattern between all letters.

Contextual alternates are usually automatically on by default, however if not, make sure the ”contextual alternates” feature is checked in your OpenType panel for a seamless experience.

This typeface family has 7 weights and includes some 1,196 glyphs with stylistic sets of uppercase, lowercase, contextual alternates, numerals, punctuation, symbols and mathematical signs.

It supports 214 latin languages with swashes and stylistic alternates available for accented letters as long as it doesn’t interfere with the letterform.

With extra thin hairlines, the Affine typeface is intended for display uses where its sophistication reaches its full potential.

Use it for posters, headlines, titles or short length text.
